Wood carbonization, also known as high-temperature thermal treatment of wood (Thermal Modification), is an environmentally friendly physical protection technology for wood that involves short-term pyrolysis treatment of wood using steam, inert gases, oil, water, and other heat transfer media at temperatures between 160 and 250°C. The treatment of wood at high temperatures can cause physical and chemical changes in the wood components, thereby improving the dimensional stability, durability, and color of the wood. The possible reason for the improved anti-corrosion performance of wood through carbonization is that during the carbonization process, the components of the wood change, cutting off the nutrient sources required for the survival of fungi; at the same time, the reduction in moisture content inhibits fungal growth, thereby enhancing its resistance to decay.
